He is a current member of the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association and is a past member and served on the board of the Heart of America Golf Course Superintendents Association. Dettmer holds a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agriculture science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He and his wife Nancy have three children, Anna, Katy and Will.

Beginning on June 19, Dettmer will be the GCSAA liaison from his home office in Charlotte for GCSAA-affiliated chapters in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. GCSAA has nine regional field staff members who maintain direct communication with 95 affiliated chapters in North America.
